SEO for Home Based Business

To be successful with search engine optimization (SEO), you must use the right tools.

It's simply impossible to conduct keyword research, analyze competitors, track rankings, track traffic and conversion trends, identify technical problems, and implement effective content marketing without the proper tools.

Yet with so many tools on the market, how do you know which to choose?

Here is a roundup of the top 13 SEO tools for small businesses.

Google Analytics

Google Analytics is a powerful and completely free website analytics tool. Once installed properly on your website, you'll be able to report on which marketing tactics drive the most traffic, which marketing tactics drive the most leads and sales conversions, how visitors use your site, which content they prefer, and so much more.

Google Search Console

Google Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools) is Google's free SEO tool. Once you set up your account, you'll get alerts if Google finds errors on your website and you'll be able to view key stats like keyword rankings, number of clicks per keyword, number of times your website showed up in the search results per keyword, and your click through rate when your website showed up in the search results.

Plus, you can link Search Console to Analytics to unlock even more reporting tools in your Analytics account. For example, once you've linked these two tools, then in Analytics you'll be able to review keyword rankings, click through rates, impressions, and the landing pages that are ranking in Google.

Search engine optimization remains an impenetrable topic for many small business owners - but even a foundational understanding of how to optimize their web presence can yield big returns in the ultra-competitive HVAC, electrical, and plumbing industries.

We've all used search engines (most likely Google) to find goods and services in our communities. Restaurants. Shopping centers. Auto repair. We use the web to discover the things around us. For many homeowners, this also includes home service businesses.

Why Is SEO Important?

When someone types “leak repair-- or “air conditioning installation-- into Google, Google's algorithm finds results that are most topically and geographically relevant to them. That means that you want your business to be on page one of Google' organic search results. It's critical to getting your business name in front of potential customers.

SEO is particularly important for small businesses because it allows them to compete for visibility in markets where larger competitors have a dominant presence. Because search query results are based on relevance, location, authority and other factors (aside from ad spend), small businesses can be featured prominently - even more prominently than much larger companies - in Google's organic search results.

Google

Google is the most used search engine on the internet -- it is the dominant search service among consumers. It has a major impact on SEO strategy when its algorithm changes. Google also provides a bunch of helpful services so you can collect and analyze data about your website and its performance. All these tools are free.

Trends -- This tool allows you to compare keywords and analyze how users are searching Google. Google Trends can be very helpful when comparing your business to competitors, or by finding the right search terms for your business.

Analytics -- Google Analytics is a valuable tool that provides in-depth data on how your website is doing. Analyze things like page views, unique page views, how users are reaching your site and information on your audience.

Search Console -- Google Search Console helps your business get discovered on Google. Google will also do a test drive of your site's map and determine if there are any errors that you can fix. By using Search Console, you can ensure your site is reachable on Google and use data to find out which products are the most successful on your site.

PageSpeed Insights -- With PageSpeed Insights, Google analyzes how fast your webpage is and will provide suggestions you can implement to improve the speed with which it loads on both desktops and mobile devices.
